Make your own natural yoga mat spray

When was the last time you cleaned your yoga mat?

Over time you’ve probably rolled out your yoga mat on all manner of surfaces – at home, in the park and at various studios.  You may have sweated or even cried on your mat but, after each session, did you just roll up your mat & store it somewhere or did you give it a quick clean?

Don’t worry, a recent survey showed that the majority of yogi’s don’t regularly clean their mat & so they probably won’t want to know what bacteria could be on their mat! (…but if you’d like to know take a read of ‘What’s Living on your Yoga Mat’)  OR,  you can skip reading this eye-opening report and decide here & now to clean your mat more often with the help of our natural, antibacterial DIY yoga mat spray!

For our Homemade DIY Yoga Mat Spray you’ll need:

  • 1x 16ozspray bottle. We like these glass ones from Amazon
  • Distilled or filtered water
  • Witch hazel or white vinegar (vinegar has a stronger scent of the two)
  • 5 drops of one of the following antibacterial essential oils : Cinnammon, Tea tree, Eucalyptus,Peppermint, Bergamont, Lemongrass, Thyme or Oregano.
  • 2 drops of Lavender essential oil

The combination we use for the sprays we make for our yoga retreats is Tea Tree & Lavender. We find this combo the most refreshing plus, Tea Tree is antibacterial & antifungal and Lavender is antibacterial & antiseptic.  If you don’t like this combo though try a blend of any of the above oils to find the one you like best.

Instructions

Quarter fill your spray bottle with witch hazel or white vinegar & top up with distilled or filtered water.  Add 5 drops of Tea Tree & 2 drops of Lavender.  Give the bottle a good shake, spray a little into the air to test the scent & if, needed, add more Tea Tree or Lavender but one drop at a time as a little goes a long way.  Once you have the scent you like, liberally spray your yoga mat and wipe with a clean dry cloth.  Clean both sides of the mat.  Leave the mat to dry completely before rolling up.  Repeat this process after each yoga session and don’t forget to clean your other yoga props regularly too. Oh & you’ll find this can also be used as a room freshner too!

How long will this spray last?

Because this is made with just witch hazel (or white vinegar), distilled water & essential oils this spray will last years! (… but if your’s lasts for years maybe you’re not using it enough!)

See, it’s that’s simple to keep your mat germ free!
